Even if you aren’t so plant savvy, these nifty ideas will give you that green thumb in no time. Here are 15 wild gardening hacks that will keep your Summer blooming!
1. Sponge Water Trick
Do you find yourself over-watering or under-watering your plants? Well with the help of a handy sponge you can give your plants the perfect amount of water they need. Just cut a fresh kitchen sponge in half and place it into the side of a pot. Then fill the pot with soil and the plant. Now you’ve got yourself a happy plant with evenly proportioned H2O!
2. Aloe + Banana = ♥
Aloe vera has many healing properties that’s why it’s always great to have one in your own backyard. If you already have an aloe vera sprout and need it to thrive all you need is a banana. That’s right just poke a hole into a banana and plant your aloe vera roots into it. Then plant the banana and aloe combo into the soil and voila! The potassium helps speed up the growing process.
3. Tea Please
If you’ve been having trouble planting seedlings into the soil there’s an alternative that’ll help your plants bloom. After a nice cup of tea (preferably black or green teas) open up the tea bag and place your seed inside the bag. Once the seeds sprout in the tea bag they’ll be ready for you to plant into a pot! The nitrogen in tea promotes growth as well!
4. Pineapple Lover’s
This is for all of you pineapple fanatics out there! It’s time to plant your favorite fruit and be proud. The next time you have a pineapple on hand, cut the top off and strip the bottom leaves off of it. Once you’ve done that poke about 3 toothpicks into the bottom and place it in water. After 6-8 weeks place the root into the soil and watch your very own pineapple grow!
5. Goodbye Root Rot
It can be tricky to find the perfect balance of water your plants need. If you overwater your plant’s their roots might begin to rot and stunt their growth. All you need to do is take out your rotting plant and place pantyhose in the pot. Then you’ll place the rotting plant into the same pot and cover it up with soil. The pantyhose help drain out excess water!
6. Orchid Care
Orchids are very temperamental plants, you don’t want to give them too much or too little. To help them thrive, use the water you use to boil rice and freeze that water into an ice cube tray. Once it’s frozen place 1-2 cubes onto the soil of your orchid. Starches in the rice help nourish the soil.
7. Leftover Water
Before you throw that leftover boiled egg water away, find a better way to repurpose it. After you boil your eggs let the water cool down and throw into your favorite plants! The calcium in the eggshells keeps soil nice and healthy.
8. Muffin Tray Trick
When planting seeds it can be difficult to figure out how far apart each plant should be. Luckily a simple muffin tray can help you out! Just place the tray into the soil, it will create indents in the dirt. That gives you a perfectly spread out guide for each seed you want to plant.
9. Wonderful Waste
Regular fertilizers can be full of chemicals that aren’t great for you or the environment. But there’s a much better way to keep your soil healthy. You can use your compost waste leftovers like a banana peel, pepper scraps, apple core, etc. to help make a natural fertilizer. Just place a good amount into the blender with water and was nicely blended pour it onto your desired soil. Magic!
10. Homemade Upside-Down Plants
Those empty icing containers can be put to great use! Just strip the label off and cut a hole in the bottom of the container. Once you’ve done that place a cardboard ring around the hole you’ve cut. Then plant your green babies facing down so you have a perfect upside-down planter.
11. Spoiled Milk?
No one enjoys spoiled milk, but our plants on the other hand might think differently. If you have spoiled or nearly spoiled milk just pour it into a bowl and mix soil into it to create a thick paste-like substance. Then just take a pinch and put it into any plant soil. The calcium acts as a natural fertilizer!
12. Self-Watering System
If you have trouble keeping up with watering your plants have no fear. Grab a larger sized mason jar and glue a tiny cup/pot onto the lid. Then plant any sprout you’d like into the pot, use a spray bottle to water the newly potted plant. Then twist the jar on top of the lid and you now have a self-watering ecosystem that holds in moisture and keeps plants thriving.
13. Unlimited Carrots
Are you tired of spending money on carrots? Well, with those scraps you can have a never-ending carrot supply. When you cut the tops of the carrots off, place them in a shallow amount of water, and watch them sprout from the top. Then you can place them in soil and have the ready to grow in no time!
14. Ice Cream Cone Planter
That delicious treat can actually help your seedlings thrive! An ice cream cone makes a wonderful biodegradable seed starter. Just fill an ice cream cone up with soil and plant your seedlings. The cone will eventually decompose and your seeds will start to sprout.
15. Shoe Rack Turned To Planter
That shoe rack hanging in your closet is actually a wonderful way to plant and organize what your growing. Just take those shoes right out and put soil in each compartment and place an orange peel with your seeds right into the shoe slots. Soon enough you’ll have a perfect horizontal planter box!
