It’s a Small Door World

Every dollhouse cover is painted to match her interior decor to give the illusion that her home is just like the ones you’d see in cartoons like Tom & Jerry. But the attention to detail doesn’t stop there.

If you guessed a hidden key, then you are correct. A lot of the comments on her original post on Imgur have called the addition of the keys an excellent addition to a really cool project. Some commenters point out how this project isn’t the best to have around pets or children, while others mention how creepy they would find these small doors. Cristina recognizes these reactions and had this to say:

“My house is full of cute and creepy décor. I have always loved miniatures and dollhouses.”

Cristina has made dollhouses before, so it’s not surprising that she enjoys the bits and bobs that make up a well-designed dollhouse. But, her love of miniatures and dollhouses goes deeper into her life, including cute and fashionable dollhouse teacup rings she enjoys wearing.

This love of cute, creepy, and original crafts has made her popular with the DIY crowd. Several DIY enthusiasts and dollhouse lovers have even asked for tips on how to make their own dollhouse door covers. Cristina was more than happy to explain.

How it was done

Cristina purchased the dollhouse doors on Amazon, unfinished and in 1:12 scale. When the unfinished doors arrived, she took them apart and reassembled them, since dollhouse doors are made to open in. Once the doors are complete and she decides where to put them, she would paint them and hot glue them to the existing plates on her outlets.

She warns that homes with small children and curious pets may want to avoid this project, since the doors can be ripped off easily. She also had some practical advice that will reduce frustration on your own outlet doors:

“It’s important to know that these doors swing in so you need to carefully remove the bottom piece of wood (I used a razor blade,) flip the door around, and re-glue it. You may need to make a new hole for the pin that allows the door to swing. Make sure you don’t glue the door shut! Lastly, paint as you like, and add details and hot glue to the existing outlet plate.”

It sounds like a lot of work, but the results are incredible even when the outlets are in use.

These shots show off the care and attention to detail that Cristina uses in every project. Not only do the doors provide an interesting conversation piece for guests, but the colors are made to match with her furnishings and accessories. Every dollhouse door adds charm and whimsy to a room without taking away from the obvious hard work she’s already put into each room.
