Taking in a stray animal without any information about their backstory can often lead to a few surprises.

And for one couple living in Austin, Texas, adopting a stray cat that they named Kevin did exactly that.

When Kevin first started coming around to Erin and Landon’s patio, they didn’t think much of it.

They tried to be friendly with the cat and give him pets, but Kevin always jumped out of the way or ran off when they tried to touch him.

Erin told Bored Panda, “During this process, my boyfriend Landon named him (her) Kevin. We would sit out on the patio with her for an hour or two every evening, she would roll around on her back for belly rubs but was really skittish and didn’t want us petting her. She would chase after us if we would get up and walk away, though.”

Are you wondering why Erin refers to Kevin as a “her?”

That’s because their first surprise about Kevin was that he was actually a she–but more on that later.

Erin and Landon were finally able to coax Kevin into their home and once they did, they made an appointment with a vet to see if Kevin was chipped so that they could potentially find her owners.

It turns out that not only was Kevin not chipped, he was also pregnant… very pregnant.

Kevin was due to have her kittens within the week.

So Erin and Landon took Kev back home and began learning everything they could about cat pregnancy.

Erin told Bored Panda, “She had her kittens 4 days after we got back from the vet, and we spent all our time reading articles for what to expect when your cat’s expecting and asking for advice from friends who had fostered kittens.”

Luckily for them, Kev’s pregnancy went smoothly and she popped out 4 healthy kittens.

Erin and Landon got to work making sure that Kev and the kittens had everything that they needed.

And they even had some help from their dog, Murphy.

According to Erin’s Instagram, Murphy and Kevin become best friends.

They were somewhat hesitant for the two to meet at first, but Murph proved to be a great kitty friend and dad.

Landon, Erin, Murphy, and Kevin were able to raise 4 healthy and adorable little kittens.

And to ensure that this situation wouldn’t happen again to someone else, Erin was able to get the kittens chipped, fixed, and vaccinated.

She did this by contacting her local animal shelter and learning how to “foster” the kittens.

She told Bored Panda, “This means that when they’re all old enough to go to their forever homes, they will be chipped, fixed, and vaccinated!”

And Erin was able to find all four kittens a forever home.

Not only that, but she was also able to find them forever homes in pairs so that the kittens would be able to remain living with at least one of their siblings.

One pair would go to a friend that lived near-by in Austin and the other pair of kittens would go to the couple’s old roommate in San Fransisco.

As for Kevin, she’ll be staying to live with Erin and Landon in Austin–no longer a stray and forever a part of the family.
